How to Install Skateboard Bearings

How to Install Skateboard Bearings

There’s no “one right way” to install skateboard bearings—but there are ways that are easier, faster, and less likely to damage your gear.

Whether you’re setting up a fresh complete or swapping wheels, this guide covers two tried-and-true methods:

  • Using a bearing press (fast, clean, and precise)

  • Using your skateboard truck (classic DIY method)

Both work. One just makes life a whole lot easier.

What You’ll Need

  • Skateboard wheels

  • 8 bearings (2 per wheel)

  • Bearing spacers (optional but recommended)

  • Skate tool or wrench

Optional (but highly recommended):

  • Bearing press

Method 1: Using a Bearing Press (Recommended)

If you install bearings regularly, this is the move. It's fast, easy, and ensures proper seating.

Why use a bearing press?

  • Even pressure = less risk of damaging bearings

  • Faster and more consistent

  • Works especially well with tighter wheels

Steps:

  1. Place the bearing onto the press

  2. Line up the wheel over the bearing

  3. Insert spacer (If using)

  4. Place second bearing onto the press, lining up with the wheel

  5. Apply steady pressure until the bearing seats fully

Pro Tip:

Make sure the bearing is fully seated—if it’s even slightly off, your wheel won’t spin properly.

Method 2: Using a Skateboard Truck (Old School Way)

No press? No problem.

This method has been around forever and still gets the job done.

Steps:

  1. Remove one wheel from your truck

  2. Slide a bearing onto the axle

  3. Stand the truck up on the axle and press the wheel down onto the bearing

  4. Apply firm, even pressure until it seats

  5. Repeat for the second bearing (don’t forget the spacer)

Watch Out:

  • Don’t press at an angle—you can damage the bearing

  • Go slow and steady to avoid bending shields

Bearing Installation Tips

  • Don’t force it – If it feels wrong, it probably is

  • Use spacers – Helps with alignment and longevity

  • Check alignment – Bearings should sit flush inside the wheel

  • Spin test – After installing, make sure everything spins smoothly

Final Thoughts

Both methods work—it really comes down to preference.

But if you’re building setups regularly or just want a smoother, hassle-free process, a bearing press makes a big difference.

Either way, take your time, keep things aligned, and you’ll be rolling smooth in no time.
